If showing a person or object in their best light is a priority for you, then a professional photographer is a must.  Sure you can rely on a friend, relative or workmate to take your photographs, but what if they don't turn out.  It is unlikely they will have the training, skill and experience plus have professional quality equipment and backup equipment to provide a successful end result.
